We're pleased to show Front Wards, Back Wards Saturday, March 15 at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts as part of the Vinfen Moving Images Festival. http://www.vinfen.org/film_festival/

We showed My Uncle Joe at the Remus Auditorium at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts 15 years ago as part of the New England Film Festival in front of a full house. During the showing there was spontaneous applause as Joe told of how he was confronted by the supervisor of a group home. I think it's safe to say Joe was not a fan of group homes. He had violated the curfew of the house, enjoying his nights out. The supervisor asked Joe why he was late. Joe responded that "This is like an institution, isn't it? This is just like going from one institution to another? Listen, I want my freedom. When I want to go out I'll go out, and I'll come back when I want come to back." Applause. "And that was that." More applause.

Joe was present and spoke after the screening. Before the film showed I told him I'd like to introduce him, if it was okay with him, and he could say some words. He said yes, "But like what should I say?" I told him he could say whatever he wanted. He was nervous and wanted more. I suggested he could thank everybody for coming, and tell them he was glad to be there, too. That's just what he said, bringing the house down.

I imagine it will be bittersweet to be back at the MFA without Joe. But so glad for all the time I did get with him.
